MIC is strictly non-myeloablative, does not eradicate host hematopoiesis, and allows relatively rapid autologous hematopoietic recovery without a transplant, but adequately myelosuppresses the recipient to enable at least partial donor engraftment.
In general, a conditioning regimen (chemotherapy ± radiation therapy ± serotherapy) is administered to the transplant recipient during the 5–12 days before HCT to myelosuppress (or myeloablate) the bone marrow while immunosuppressing the host immune system
The new setting of this approach is that you can now do it under entirely nonlethal conditions, where you lymphoablate and only myelosuppress the host, and you can get engraftment, long-term chimerism, and graft acceptance without any GVHD.
